Well, it depends.

No two people's metabolism is exactly the same and one person may find if they cut their Modafinil in half, this will be a solid dose to them for the day.

Another may need to cut it even more, as the drug is quite potent.

The rule of thumb here is that you do not increase your dose, but instead make it smaller.

For example, if you are taking 200mg of Modafinil, you should not take any less than 100mg.

You can start at 100 mg and work your way up to 200 or even 300 mg without hesitation.

If you feel that the 200mg dose doesn't cut it for you, then consider reducing to a lower dose (e.g., 100 mg - which is half a pill) and assess how that works out for you.

Before You Cut Your Dose

The typical half-life time frame is around 10 to 12 hours, so if you had a full pill in the morning, you could still dose again in the afternoon.

You could even take an additional dose 3 or 4 hours after your first one, but that can be too much for some people.

You are better off at a lower dose and cutting that pill into a half (or quarters.)

Modafinil is not recommended for women who may be pregnant or breastfeeding.

Also, you should not use modafinil if you have a heart condition or any other serious health issue.

Modafinil Side effects by themselves are rare, but with something like this, it's important to take all the variables into account and understand what you're dealing with when taking a drug like Modafinil.

Benefits of Cutting Your Dose

You may want to take half the pill in the morning and a half in the afternoon, but this can have certain consequences as well.

If you take the whole pill in one go, you need to remember to take your pill at the same time every day.

If you decide to split the pill into two smaller doses, you'll need to take the second half 30-60 minutes after taking the first half.

You also have to remember when you took your initial dose and make sure you don't get confused when taking the second one.

Modafinil is a very powerful drug, but it's up to you and your physician to work out what is best for you.

Benefits of Not Cutting Your Dose

If you're willing to take the whole pill in one go, you don't have to worry about forgetting your schedule.

Once you decide what time you are going to take your Modafinil, it's better to stick to it as much as possible.

The slight disadvantage here is that you may get a higher dosage of the drug in one go than if you split it in half.

However, the benefits far outweigh the small risks associated with taking the whole pill.

Side effects that come from splitting your dose
If you decide to take Modafinil in a divided manner, you may run into some small side effects.

One particular problem that can appear is insomnia.

This side effect can be caused by the higher dosage of Modafinil or from taking the second half too late in the day.

The only way to avoid this is by completely avoiding taking one large Modafinil pill (200 mg) at a time, which will normally solve your problem.

Other side effects that may appear are:

  • Restlessness
  • Nausea
  • Acid reflux (stomach acid coming back up to the throat)

Modafinil works best when taken on an empty stomach and should never be mixed with alcohol.

You also need to avoid taking Modafinil with any other stimulants as this may lead to serious health issues.
